This explains what information Contend collects, why, and what happens to it. Contend is run from the United Kingdom by the Contend team.

1. What we collect

  • Account info — your email address and password (stored securely by our authentication provider, Supabase; we never see your password in plain text).
  • Google sign-in — if you choose “Continue with Google,” Google tells us your name, email address and profile picture, and we use your email address to create or sign in to your account. We never see your Google password.
  • Debate content — the messages you send during debates, the AI opponent’s replies, and your grading results, so you can review past debates and track progress. If you delete a debate it disappears from your history, but we keep a copy to enforce fair play and prevent abuse; email us and we will erase it for good.
  • Learn progress — which lessons you’ve completed.
  • Leaderboard nickname — when you earn Contend Points you appear on the leaderboards, together with your points, under a nickname. If you haven’t chosen one we give you a name like User1234. You can change it or remove yourself at any time.
  • Waitlist signups — if you join the waitlist before an account exists, we store just your email.
  • Subscription status — whether you’re on the free or paid tier, and a reference ID linking your account to your Stripe subscription. We never receive or store your card number — Stripe handles that entirely.

2. How we use it

  • To create and secure your account, and keep you signed in.
  • To run debates and grading — your messages are sent to Anthropic’s API to generate the opponent’s replies and score your performance.
  • To track your Learn progress and unlock the right content.
  • To process payments and manage your subscription (via Stripe).
  • To send account-related emails — confirming your email address, password resets, and (if you’re on the waitlist) a notification when Contend launches. We don’t send marketing emails unless you’ve separately agreed to them.

3. Who we share it with

We don’t sell your data. We share it only with the service providers that make Contend work, each bound to use it only for that purpose:

  • Supabase — hosts our database and handles account authentication.
  • Anthropic — processes debate messages to generate opponent replies and grading feedback.
  • Stripe — processes payments and manages subscriptions.
  • Resend — delivers account-related emails (confirmation, password reset).
  • Google — if you choose “Continue with Google,” Google verifies your identity and shares the details above with us. Google’s own privacy policy covers how it handles your sign-in.
  • Vercel — hosts the application itself.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the security of the Service.

4. Cookies

We use a small number of cookies strictly required to keep you signed in and to remember your session. We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

5. Data retention and deletion

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you’d like your account and associated data deleted, email support@contendapologetics.org and we’ll process the request within a reasonable time. Canceling a subscription doesn’t delete your account — it just stops future billing.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain uses of it. To exercise any of these, email support@contendapologetics.org.

7. Children

Contend isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under that age.

8. Changes to this policy

If we make a material change to how we handle your data, we’ll make reasonable efforts to let existing users know (e.g. by email).
